Formed out of a shared need to address ongoing housing issues, SBTU serves as a collective voice for tenants facing challenges related to maintenance, safety, and fair treatment.
Our mission is to empower residents through education, support, and collective action. We strive to ensure that all tenants live in safe, healthy, and dignified conditions. By uniting our efforts, we aim to hold property management accountable, influence housing policies, and foster a strong, supportive community.
Join us in our commitment to creating a better living environment for all. Together, we can make a difference.
The SB Tenants Union (SBTU) was born out of necessity and a collective desire for change. Our journey began with a small group of residents from the SB Buildings in Downtown Los Angeles who were frustrated by persistent issues in their homes. Maintenance problems, safety hazards, and a lack of responsiveness from property management were affecting our daily lives and well-being.
The Turning Point
In early 2022, a series of severe maintenance failures, including prolonged water outages and hazardous living conditions, reached a breaking point. This crisis galvanized residents to come together and demand accountability. It became clear that individual complaints were not enough – we needed a united front to amplify our voices and drive meaningful change.
Formation of the SBTU
In response to these challenges, we formed the SB Tenants Union in May 2022. Our initial meetings were held in living rooms and community spaces, where we shared our stories, frustrations, and hopes for a better future. We quickly realized the power of solidarity and began organizing more formally, setting our sights on creating a safer, healthier, and more respectful living environment for all residents.
